glitchin the matrix by Ziblink glitchin the matrix by Ziblink
Meet the Sapphirina copepod; about the size of a grain of rice it's the most beautiful animal you've never seen: vimeo.com/58293792

Watching these things really is like watching a glitch in the matrix, you have to see the video, fullscreen and at least go to 40 seconds in. In palces so many of these creatures gather that the water itself sparkles.

We have 'em too, if you're lucky enough to see 'em. It's truly a sight not to be missed.

Either that thing is incredibly flat or my eyes don't work anymore.

It's reasonably flat, as flat as a pillbug anyway.

I haven't seen any pillbugs around so I wouldn't know, really.

They're like meth tablets or large shotgun pellets only rounder.

Bioluminescent creatures – while not particularly odd – are always interesting and beautiful to watch, and the Sapphirina copepod are certainly not an exception! (then again, the fact they seem to be capable of becoming frickin’ invisible to the human eye is even more amazing!).

You should try swimming with 'em. You can't photograph it which just makes it even more magical.

I thought that was a little trilobite.

It certainly looks it doesn't it? But it's more closely related to pill bugs (Or woodlice depending on where you live.)
