Time goes on

I sit here with those aged by time,
Those whose youth has passed.
Yet here with me they sit as well,
Through the years they're holding fast.

Though eyes are dim and limbs are weak,
And loved ones have passed for some,
Still yet they have tremendous faith,
There's more life yet to come.

What will happen in days hence,
When their life is done?
They continue in the world,
Still time hurries on.

I hope I have such fortitude,
When I am old as they,
And live my life as they have done,
Day by passing day.

May we all now recognize,
That they were once young too.
And whatever fate finds them now,
Will in time find us too.

What will happen in days hence,
When their life is done?
They continue in the world,
Still time hurries on.
For my oma, going, going...

Picture is from Mt Taranaki, I went skiing there last weekend.

Absolutely beautiful, Zibby: isn't it funny how easily we forget we'll all inevitably grow old and die? We fight both old age and death with all our might but, if there's anything really valuable about Life is the clear realization that living our years in a way we won't regret (either now or on our deathbeds) is a good choice.

I agree with Den (:eyepopping:) about the sheer magnificence of that penultimate paragraph/strophe thing.

By the way: the third paragraph reminded me of Borges' excellent "Milonga de Manuel Flores" (translated by Robert Mezey. He changed a couple things I liked but I find the overall product enjoyable still).
