Remembrance

It was early morning and the sun streamed into the room through the open curtains, lighting up the dust specks in the air like little daytime stars. In the bed John tossed and turned as the sun slowly nudged him awake.

John turned over and sleepy rubbed his eyes. With difficulty they focused on the tree outside as his mind enjoyed that brief period where you're awake but your mind has yet to realize just where it is, what it did to get there and what it'll do next. John spent several minutes in this state of ignorance, enjoying the warmth of bed, the softness of the pillow and the lul of sleep.

But of course, it was time to get up. What day was it...? He couldn't remember. That was the thing with holidays, two weeks of blissful fun before the drudgery of school returned. Maybe he'd go to Jack's house and they could both visit the local swimming hole, it was bound to be hot enough. Or maybe he should help out around the house today, the garden would need digging and that wasn't bad work, indeed quite entertaining. Or he could take a short walk out in the woods at the edge of town, there was always something to see or do there. Smiling to himself John leaned back and fell back into the arm embrace of slumber.

The nurse arrived an hour later to turn down the sheets and bring breakfast. She looked at the pale old man, felt his pulse, then sighed.

"Oh what a pity, three days short of his 87th too poor dear."

.
Y'know, Sara hasn't read a single one of these, even after promising to. I'm gonna see just how many I can post before she even notices them. (I'll stop after 10, I promise.)
