Description

Aaaand this guy (Girl? I can't sex them like the butterflies) is one of the many just hitting their stride as autumn closes in. These looper caterpillar moths eat anything from tomatoes to kumara to beans and look like lime green inchworms. If you can keep the parasites off them (Which make them look like stockings full of grubs.) then in less than a week they hatch out from thin silken cocoons to this.

While not as majestic as emperor gum moths, they hatch earlier (My gums won't be out until spring.) I don't think they move oversas, just sit in a warm spot over winter and spring, emerging in summer for another year of fun.

The first time I got a good, focused picture of one.

Good picture: this guy/gal reminds me of those regular (and annoying!) moths that will sometimes fly into my room: one of the downsides of having a big garden.
While they won't do much in general, besides of landing right on whatever book I might be reading at the time (I refuse to kill them, though!) they might end up attracting Loki's attention: he usually can't reach nor do a thing to them but, in the unlikely event he notices and catches them while they're resting on the floor, something bizarre happens: he jumps on them (as in, lifts both his forepaws and lands on the bugs several times), after having toyed with them for a couple seconds.

He does the same with cockroaches - even if those are, obviously, more of a challenge for him.

I can only wonder how's THAT supposed to be normal. :XD:
